Like so many things in New York, the mayoral race is super-sized (not that current Mayor Bloomberg approves). According to WSKG Radio, “No less than a dozen candidates are vying to succeed Michael Bloomberg as leader of the nation’s biggest city — five Republicans and seven Democrats.” Despite the primaries being months away, they’ve already attended hundreds of citizens’ forums and called on their celebrity connections to get the word out. Big personalities make the race This means that the big personalities tend to lead the pack. Fighting for the leadership role in the Democratic race is a neck-in-neck battle between City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a steady ally of Mayor Bloomberg, and Anthony Weiner, a former US Congressman taken down by a sexting scandal. Not to be outdone by Weiner’s skeletons, Quinn has recently published an autobiography titled “Patience and Fortitude” that delves into her bulimia and alcoholism. If Quinn wins, she would also be the first openly gay mayor. Yet despite an early front-runner status, her poll numbers have been slipping and Weiner has been gaining ground. Is it because voters like scandals involving sex better than booze? No, it’s more likely that Quinn’s deal with Bloomberg “to overturn the city’s term-limits law” according to WSKG, which allowed Bloomberg to have a third term as the city’s helm did not sit well with voters. As the race heats up, the stars come out Surprisingly for an openly gay candidate, Quinn also needs to shore up support among her LGBT community. Democratic Bill de Blasio, for example, has a “LGBT for BdB” gala scheduled, run by no less than Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon of “Sex in the City” fame. He also has a video by Hip Hop Magnate Russell Simmons, and Alec Baldwin of “30 Rock” is auctioning off two invitations to dinner for a de Blasio financial supporter. Not to be outdone, Quinn revealed a star-studded list of LGBT backers, including Singer Lance Bass, Playwright Harvey Fierstein, “Project Runway” Guru Tim Gunn, Tony Host Neil Patrick Harris and “Star Trek“ Actor George Takei. Other stars flocking to her side include Whoopi Goldberg, Rob Reiner and Brooke Shields. Not to be outdone, the Republicans are calling in their own celebrity power. George McDonald has ties to Actor Ethan Hawke.
